Kuala Lumpur- TOMS, the company known for starting a global movement through its One for One® business model, had a lot to celebrate on May 10 as the brand hit their 10 year milestone and carried out TOMS 9th annual ‘One Day Without Shoes’ (2nd in Malaysia) to raise awareness for children’s health and education.
In Malaysia, TOMS birthday and ‘One Day Without Shoes’ was celebrated in front of TOMS store at 1 Utama Shopping Centre with a fun-filled day of barefoot activities, barefoot art, barefoot performances by the likes of Winnie K, Ninie Ahmad with Upward Yoga, LindyKL, and of course a barefoot walk.
TOMS also offered a peak into a successful decade of giving through their milestone gallery. The event was open to public and throughout the day people united at the venue to raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life by taking off their own.
Millions of children around the world grow up without shoes, at risk of infection and disease. Children lacking access to education and good health struggle to break the poverty cycle for themselves, their families and their communities. With the complex issues surrounding poverty, there is not one solution, but many working together. TOMS believes that shoes play an important role in helping keep children healthy, educated and moving toward opportunities for a better future. Some notable statistics to consider:
• Health – Podoconiosis is a debilitating disease that causes extremely painful swelling of the feet and legs. It affects more than 4 million people and can be prevented by wearing shoes.
• Education – Providing children with school uniforms – which often include shoes – can increase school attendance by 62%.
• Empowerment – When shoes are integrated into programs with larger community development goals, they empower children and their families to get the care and support they need.
To celebrate 10 years of TOMS and a decade of Giving, TOMS invited the public to help Give back during One Day Without Shoes, through TOMS Instagram campaign:
On May 10, Instagram your TOMS shoes + your bare feet with the hashtag #withoutshoes and help us give up to 100,000 new pairs of shoes to children in need in 10 countries.

In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One®.
